5 Steps in biogas production from palm oil mill effluent (POME)
In an era where clean energy and environmental conservation have become topics of interest, choosing alternative energy that has a lesser impact on the environment is something that many businesses have to considered. The palm oil extraction factory is one of the industries that generate large amounts of wastewater or “Palm Oil Mill Effleunt (POME)” from the production process.
POME can be applied for biogas production which not only reduces environmental impact, but it can also turns waste into valuable energy. In this article, Papop team will explore the 5 steps on biogas production from POME. How can it be done and what are the benefits?
Biogas production process from POME
- Wastewater collection and treatment:
- Wastewater from palm oil mills has high amount of organic substances. Collecting and treating wastewater is the first step in producing biogas. The wastewater is collected and cool down in a large basin before pumping to the acidification process.
- Acidification process:
- In this step, acidogenesis bacteria will break down large molecules like protien, carbohydrate and oil to smaller molecules like volatile fatty acids. These acids can be easily digested by the methanogenesis microbes in the next step to produce biogas.
- Anaerobic digestion process:
- In this process, microbes will decompose organic substances in wastewater under conditions without the oxygen. This process releases biogas that is mainly composed of Methane gas (CH4) and Carbon dioxide (CO2).
- Biogas collection and storage:
- The biogas is collected in specially designed gas storage. Afterwards, the biogas must be treated to remove hydrogen sulfide gas by using H2S Bio-Scrubber process. The treated biogas can be utilized as an energy source in factories or can be sold to other off-takers.
- Additional wastewater treatment:
- After the wastewater has been treated with anaerobic digestion, the remaining effluent (digestate) is further treated before being released into the nearby watercourse. Alternatively, the treated water can be reused in the production process by using membrane filtration system.

Benefits of producing biogas from POME
- Decrease energy costs:
- The biogas can be used as heat energy in factories. It helps reducing external energy consumption and decreases the operating costs.
- Minimize environmental impact:
- Producing biogas from POME can reduce the environmental problem. The pollution can be caused by the release of the fresh POME into natural water bodies. This process can also help reducing emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
- Increase income:
- Palm oil mill owners can also sell biogas as Compressed Biomethane Gas (CBG) and enjoy additional revenue to the mills.
